Abstract

The sustainable development goals (SDGs)—a unified planet-wide framework to tackle the multi-faceted issues of poverty, inequality, environmental degradation, and economic growth that are interrelated—is in anxious demand for a stride ahead opportunity. Furthermore, the realization of the SDGs in many developing countries is faced with a number of serious institutional problems. Affected are the government shortcomings, inconsistent policy frameworks, funding deficits, as well as the local human resources shortages. Even though the macroeconomic environment has some unique challenges, it is not devoid of opportunities—like technological leapfrogging, social entrepreneurship, public-private partnerships (PPPs), as well as circular economy—which can significantly make a difference in realizing the SDGs. The present chapter analyzes the double forces: barriers—presenting—and opportunities—for the further development, respectively. Using this as a foundation, an effort is made to provide—in detail—an outline of the ways in which emerging economies can tackle institutional constraints and realize their large reservoir of unexplored potential. Therefore, a strategic approach is being paid attention to so as to highlight public policy reforms, attractive financing strategies, institutional building, and cooperation among stakeholders are emphasized as important integrated options for sustainable transformation. These highlight the importance of governance reformation, technology, and international partnerships in SDG speed up and ultimately in the development of an inclusive and resilient agenda in low and middle-income countries. This will guide the revision process of policies.
